5 Healthy Tips for Busy Moms

Looking for some healthy tips for busy moms?

I get it. I totally get it. It’s easy to run through the drive thru. It’s easy to sit and eat chocolate covered almonds (my vice) and watch Netflix. It’s easy to eat your kids leftovers. It’s easy to stay in bed an extra 30 minutes than get up and work out.

I get it.

Whether you work in or out of the house, you are busy.

The tough truth that I have had to face is that you make time for things you want to do. Whatever it is, you will make the time if it’s important to you.

We all have the same 24 hours in a day. No one gets more. And it’s up to YOU how you spend those 24 hours.

Now this post isn’t about time management. Instead I’m going to give you 5 healthy tips that I have learned while being a busy mom!

1) Meal Plan

Before you go to the grocery, make a meal plan and include snacks for the family. (This is something that’s easy to forget until I hear the dreaded “I want a snack!”)

Get fruits and veggies. Hummus. Yogurt. Applesauce. Whatever healthy snacks that you like and have it readily available so you don’t always head for the back of chocolate chips.

By meal planning, you don’t necessarily need to know what you will make on each day, but you need to know what you will be cooking so you can be sure you have all the ingredients. This keeps you from saying, “pick up a pizza. We have nothing to cook.”

Tip: Do an inventory of your kitchen and pantry prior to making your grocery list, so you only get what you need!

2) Meal Prep

Not to be confused with meal planning. Meal prepping is actually prepping the foods. If you are new to meal prepping, start small.

Don’t overwhelm yourself. This is meant to be helpful not stressful.

Depending upon how much work you want to put into it, this could take a half hour or it could take a couple hours. You can clean and cut your fruits and veggies so they are ready to eat or cook. Make overnight oats for breakfasts, so all you have to do is grab and go. Make crockpot chicken for protein throughout the week. Mix up some salads. Your choice. Do as little or as much as you want.

3) Skip the Sodas

You already know they are bad and if you are wanting to make a quick healthy change, this is a great place to start. Instead, drink water. If you want to add taste, infuse with fruit and herbs.

4) Replace Your Coffee Creamer

I don’t know about you, but I used to be one of those coffee drinkers that would drink a little coffee with my creamer. I would always get a caramel macchiato when I went to Starbucks.

Now, I have traded my macchiato for black coffee with some stevia and almond milk. (It’s half the price too!) This does take some getting used to so play around with ingredients.

You can get liquid Stevia like this and it’s great in coffee. You can add pure vanilla extract and unsweetened vanilla almond milk. Try some cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice for a Fall coffee. Adding coconut oil to your coffee and blending it is delicious and makes it super frothy!

If you still want a creamer, just be sure to check the ingredient list and avoid a sugar overload and ingredients like corn syrup (which is sugar too) and all those crazy ingredients that you can’t pronounce. So Delicious makes a great coconut milk creamer. Thrive Market also has some great options like a French Vanilla Dairy Free option and for those who want to get the benefits of collagen with their morning coffee, you can add Collagen Peptides.

5) Get Moving

Get moving! You don’t have to do an hour of Insanity everyday, but do something. Take a walk on your lunch break. Consider taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Get a fitness tracker and track your steps.

Aim for 30 minutes of activity a day. Not only is it good for your body, but it’s good for your mind. Find an activity that you like and if you need to enlist a friend or join a group for accountability. That can be a game changer. Let me know if I can help you with accountability! I’d love to be your cheerleader!

Two years, I discovered and immersed myself in all things healthy. I started working out and eating healthy foods and was in the best shape of my life at age 32.

When I got pregnant with my singleton, I vowed to continue what I was doing and make it a fit pregnancy. Everything started well and then I just stopped.

Fast forward to today and my youngest is 7 months. I love how I feel when I’m active and eating well, but I have made so many excuses as to why I shouldn’t get back to it.

I’m too busy. I have three small children (3, 3 and under). I’m too tired.

Last night, it hit me that what I have been lacking is accountability. So, starting today, I will be holding myself accountable my sharing my journey with you all because I know there are so many women who have the same excuses as me.

Let’s start with food. I LOVE food! Carbs are my best friend and enemy. I’m sure many of you can relate to that. I’m ready to clean up my kitchen for myself and my family, so I’m going to share with you my favorite healthy foods that are totally delicious too! (And most are toddler and husband approved!)

My Favorite Healthy Foods That Are Also Delicious

Overnight Oats

This is one of my favorite go-to breakfasts or snacks. Add Greek yogurt, oats, splash of unsweetened almond milk and your choice of fruit in a bowl or jar. Let it set overnight (hence the name) and you have a yummy breakfast!

Who doesn’t love pancakes? This is a yummy recipe that uses oats instead of flour.

Strawberry Sorbet

Make this treat at home in your blender. My girls are obsessed with this. Since you make it at home, you control the ingredients so you don’t have all the unnecessary sugar that’s added to the store bought version. Did I mention it’s so incredibly easy?

Apple/sweet potato hash

Chop up an apple and a sweet potato in small chunks and add to a skillet that has coconut oil in it. Cook until soft and sprinkle some cinnamon on top. Yum! Great for a side, breakfast, or meal prepping. I love to add some feta on top too. You can also add some bacon or turkey bacon because, well, who doesn’t love bacon?!

I love roasted asparagus with olive oil and salt (I omit the pepper because I’m allergic). Sprinkle some parmesan cheese if you want.

Protein shakes

Chocolate is my go-to with a tsp of peanut butter and half a banana with unsweetened almond milk.

Grilled salmon is amazing. I like to put a bit of dijon mustard on top with a parmesan/bread crumb mix.

Deviled eggs

Nix the mayo mix and use dijon mustard instead. Top with paprika.

It doesn’t get easier than zoodles. Using a spiralizer or veggie peeler, make noodles from the zucchini. Toss with olive oil to warm them and you have a yummy, healthy alternative to pasta.

Chicken sausage

This is a staple in our house. This is a delicious alternative to your typical breakfast sausage. Add some apple/sweet potato hash and you have a great breakfast for your family. Grab your coupon for Applegate breakfast sausage here. This coupon is redeemable at Whole Foods stores.

If you love natural and organic foods and products, you have to check out Mambo Sprouts! You can get awesome offers from them in your Valpak envelope.

I’d love to know what your favorite healthy foods or meals are. Share it in the comments!

Healthy Finds: Program Review + FREE Gift Card!

If you know me well, then you know I LOVE health and wellness. Since becoming a mom, I have been researching products and foods that are good for my family. I mean, actually good. Many companies give us the impression that something is healthy, when it reality it is not. That’s not what you get with Healthy Finds!

Healthy Finds is a program that is dedicated to finding healthy products. What really stands out to me is their desire to also inform consumers about what they are really putting in their bodies. In the words of the company, “It’s time to take back your health”.

I couldn’t agree more. Some many companies confuse us (consumers) about what is truly healthy and beneficial. Healthy Finds, led by Dr. Andrew Campbell, puts in the leg work.

What do I think?

I love that they find products for everyone, including your little ones. It’s so difficult when we are bombarded by companies who tell us that they are healthy or organic when often they are only putting some “healthy stuff” in and marketing it as the best choice. It’s pretty frightening the things that are in our “good for you” products.

I like how you can earn cash back in the form of gift cards from many of the places you are probably already shopping (I’m talking to you Amazon and Target fans, I see you) when you purchase products from the brands that Healthy Finds is already working with. You just send them the receipts here.

I do worry that you could end up spending more than you normally would as some brands have a minimum purchase price to redeem certain gift cards; however the products that I have seen are pretty incredible, so it could totally be worth it. (My wish list is pretty long at this point lol)

If you are ready to get started, sign up here. They have an awesome introductory offer expiring soon! (P.S. I do NOT get a commission if you sign up.)
