Pregnancy! I have to say, I’m one of the women who loved it. Of course, I was pretty sick, especially with the twins, but loved the process nonetheless. 

Pregnancy can take a toll on your body. I’m sure we can all agree that the stress is worth it when you see that beautiful little faces for the first time. But the struggle can definitely be real. 

As if the physical struggle weren’t enough, pregnancy hormones often impact everything from mental state to taste buds. Your favorite food may come under fire during those nine months, too. Of course, as with anything, the best way to prepare is to know what to expect. So, we’re going to look at what pregnancy could do to your favorite foods.

New Favorite Foods

We all have favorite foods. Perhaps you love chocolate. Or, maybe you have a soft spot for pasta. Whatever your favorites are before pregnancy, you better prepare for a change in menu. Cravings are about to create new favorites you would never have dreamed of. We’re talking cucumbers dipped in chocolate and endless supplies of pickles.

Cravings often seem to have no rhyme or reason, but your body needs what it needs. What’s more, these cravings can make themselves known as early as your first trimester. Now, there are some women that don’t get the crazy cravings, so only time will tell.

Food Allergies

Many of us consider food allergies as one of those things we either have or don’t. But, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Often, such allergies come about as a result of hormonal fluctuations. So, while it isn’t a set part of pregnancy, many women do develop allergies to certain foods. Sorry to say, chocolate seems to be on the list of frequent offenders here, as do many dairy products.

If you receive a positive result, your favorites will have to take a back seat. The good news is, many such allergies do clear up. But, it’s certainly worth changing the menu for the time being.

Morning Sickness

It doesn’t take a genius to work out that pregnancy can leave you feeling pretty nauseous. Horror stories of morning sickness (or all day sickness) are enough to frighten us all. But, what you might not realize is that the food you love could soon start to turn your stomach. Certain things seem to trigger that sick feeling, and the food is a frequent offender, especially the stinky stuff. So, your love of cheese might suffer for the duration of your pregnancy. Two years, I discovered and immersed myself in all things healthy. I started working out and eating healthy foods and was in the best shape of my life at age 32.

When I got pregnant with my singleton, I vowed to continue what I was doing and make it a fit pregnancy. Everything started well and then I just stopped.

Fast forward to today and my youngest is 7 months. I love how I feel when I’m active and eating well, but I have made so many excuses as to why I shouldn’t get back to it.

I’m too busy. I have three small children (3, 3 and under). I’m too tired.

Last night, it hit me that what I have been lacking is accountability. So, starting today, I will be holding myself accountable my sharing my journey with you all because I know there are so many women who have the same excuses as me.

Let’s start with food. I LOVE food! Carbs are my best friend and enemy. I’m sure many of you can relate to that. I’m ready to clean up my kitchen for myself and my family, so I’m going to share with you my favorite healthy foods that are totally delicious too! (And most are toddler and husband approved!)

Overnight Oats

This is one of my favorite go-to breakfasts or snacks. Add Greek yogurt, oats, splash of unsweetened almond milk and your choice of fruit in a bowl or jar. Let it set overnight (hence the name) and you have a yummy breakfast!

Pancakes

Who doesn’t love pancakes? This is a yummy recipe that uses oats instead of flour.

Strawberry Sorbet

Make this treat at home in your blender. My girls are obsessed with this. Since you make it at home, you control the ingredients so you don’t have all the unnecessary sugar that’s added to the store bought version. Did I mention it’s so incredibly easy?

Apple/sweet potato hash

Chop up an apple and a sweet potato in small chunks and add to a skillet that has coconut oil in it. Cook until soft and sprinkle some cinnamon on top. Yum! Great for a side, breakfast, or meal prepping. I love to add some feta on top too. You can also add some bacon or turkey bacon because, well, who doesn’t love bacon?!

Asparagus

I love roasted asparagus with olive oil and salt (I omit the pepper because I’m allergic). Sprinkle some parmesan cheese if you want.

Protein shakes

Chocolate is my go-to with a tsp of peanut butter and half a banana with unsweetened almond milk.

Salmon

Grilled salmon is amazing. I like to put a bit of dijon mustard on top with a parmesan/bread crumb mix.

Deviled eggs

Nix the mayo mix and use dijon mustard instead. Top with paprika.

Zoodles

It doesn’t get easier than zoodles. Using a spiralizer or veggie peeler, make noodles from the zucchini. Toss with olive oil to warm them and you have a yummy, healthy alternative to pasta.

Chicken sausage

This is a staple in our house. This is a delicious alternative to your typical breakfast sausage. Add some apple/sweet potato hash and you have a great breakfast for your family. Grab your coupon for Applegate breakfast sausage here. This coupon is redeemable at Whole Foods stores.
