Speaking of mom life, my “mom uniform” these days has been workout clothes. I try to work out daily, but that doesn’t always happen. My mindset is that if I’m wearing the proper attire, then I’m halfway there. And let’s be honest, tanks and yoga pants are pretty stinkin’ comfortable.

It’s been a while since I have posted a Friday Favorites. I’ve had every intention on making this edition a regular staple, but you know, mom life. Speaking of mom life, my “mom uniform” these days has been workout clothes. I try to work out daily, but that doesn’t always happen. My mindset is that if I’m wearing the proper attire, then I’m halfway there. And let’s be honest, tanks and yoga pants are pretty stinkin’ comfortable.

I recently wrote a post about Self Care For Moms and it has been greatly received. It’s such an important topic that we tend to forget about or push to the side. It’s so important to be taking care of you!

Some call it self care. Some call it self love. Whatever you call it, it is so important to take care of yourself. Read on and check out ten self care ideas for moms!

Before Mommyhood

Before becoming a mom, I had no problem in this department! Granted I wasn’t getting manicures regularly and would you believe I have NEVER had a pedicure?? However, I would always take time for myself: monthly hair appointments (I had super high maintenance blonde hair), weekend naps, retail therapy, etc.

After Joining the Mommyhood

When I became a mom, I thought, like many others, that the more I sacrificed of myself, the better mom I would be. I spent the first 18 months of the twins’ lives doing just that. Skipping meals, skipping showers, not reading (unless it was a children’s book), not spending time with God, not doing anything for me. I was convinced that if I put myself on the back burner, I would be the best mom.

Guess what? I was the opposite of the best mom. There I was: exhausted, grumpy, and probably pretty stinky lol

I needed a change. It was time to take care of me. I didn’t think of it as self care at the time. I just thought of it as getting my s@*t together. For me, working out and eating well made a massive difference. Just like Elle Woods said, “working out releases endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people don’t…” well you know the rest!

Make the Time!

So, listen up! Focusing all of your attention on other people will not make you a better person. Taking 30 minutes a day to do something for you does not make you selfish. Going out for a cup of coffee and sitting in a parking lot and watching “Uptown Girls” in your SUV while your husband is at home with the kids doesn’t make you a bad mom. (It was literally the only movie in my car at the time, so don’t judge me!)

I have actually found myself in desperate need of refocusing on my self care. I’m now a SAHM to 3 (3 and under). I have been spending so much time growing my brand and blog (which I love doing), but I haven’t been spending any time on myself. I’m totally preaching to the choir here, I know. I’m with you though! I am making the promise to myself and my family that I will take better care of myself.

How I Made Myself Spend $50 At Target!

Let’s play a game! Let’s say that I had $100 to give you, but you had to spend it on yourself. (Not the kiddos, but YOU!) Then I’ll tell you how I made myself spend $50 at Target…

I have to say, this would be really difficult for me. Now, before I became a mom, I loved to shop for me. In college, my friends and I would go to the mall once a week to buy outfits for the weekends. We usually went to Forever 21. (That may show my age. Do the coeds still shop there?)

Now that I’m a mom, it is soooo difficult to spend money on myself. I am always thinking, well, I should get this for the girls. Y’all! I don’t even want to tell you the last time I bought myself underwear better yet a new bra! It’s crazy!

For my birthday last month, our sweet neighbor gave me $50 and told me I had to spend it on me. I promised her I would but immediately started feeling this guilt. Mom guilt? I spoke with my friend and life coach about it and she told me to think about my integrity. If I tell my neighbor I am going to do something and then don’t follow through, what does that say about me? Wow! I never thought of it that way.

Off to Target I went with the plan of spending that $50 in record time. Is there any better place to go than Target? Seriously? You walk in and immediately hand over all your money! Spending $50 should be a cinch.

I walked the aisles. Looked at all the cute clothes. Realizing I had no where to wear them because, SAHM. I walked around the store for 2 hours with an EMPTY shopping cart. Two hours. Empty shopping cart. In Target! WHO AM I?

My anxiety was building up. I literally felt like I was going to puke. I called my husband and said, “you won’t believe this. I can’t spend this money!” I’m sure most husbands are wishing their wives would make that phone call and normally mine would too, but he agreed that I should buy myself something “real nice.” (If you don’t get that movie reference, we can’t be friends lol)

So, I did it. I spent the money on a new workout outfit. Sports bra. Tank. Yoga pants. Grand total: $50.03. Mission: completed.

Why am I telling you this story? Because I’m not the only mom who struggles to spend on herself. I’m not the only mom who has some small (or big) holes in those once sexy Victoria Secret underwear. I’m not the only mom who still has some Forever 21 jeans in the closet. (Gasp) I’m actually wearing mine as I write this. I’m not the only mom who wears yoga pants with runners in them because I wore them through 2 pregnancies and dang it, they were expensive.

It’s so important that we remember to take care of ourselves too. You can’t pour from an empty cup. There’s a reason on airplanes they say you should put on your face mask first BEFORE you help anyone else.

This could be as simple as taking a walk, getting up before the kiddos and having a cup of coffee in silence or spending that damn $50 at Target!

Best Products For New Moms

Since I’m a “veteran” mom now (I guess lol), I have the experience of knowing what products I actually needed. With my first pregnancy, I wanted everything which lead to having tons of stuff that I actually did NOT need.

Sophie & Carley’s Day Out

The day is almost here! The day we bring our sweet new addition into this world.

I am beyond excited to meet Baby Girl Nau. I am excited for the girls to meet her and become big sisters.

I am also a bit nervous. For 3 years, I have been a stay at home mom to Sophie and Carley. When Daddy is at work, it’s just us 3 amigas. How will they react to sharing us even more than they’ve already had to? Will they be ok watching me nurse their baby sister when they have only recently been weaned? Will they adjust to our new life quickly?

We will see. In the meantime, I am spending as much quality time with them as possible. This past Friday, it was rainy and chilly, but I had promised them a girls day. I documented our last day out before baby sister comes.

First on the agenda…let them pick out their own outfits. These girls have style for sure!

Next, we grabbed our umbrella and headed to the library. They love the library. Different toys and books to read. What’s not to love?

The girls met the library’s new pets, Milo & Otis. They are white feeder mice that the library saved. The girls asked if they could have them. Hmmm…I don’t think Daddy would be up for pet mice.

Notice, Carley’s arm around her sissy. A little girl walked up to Sophie and after noticing her, Carley put her around around Sophie. Protective sister?

Some kiddos read at the table. These girls prefer a cozy nook.

They love the water fountain and after all that reading and playing, a water break was a must.

I promised the girls a big chocolate chip cookie after the library. Note to self: don’t promise said cookie until you know for sure that Starbucks isn’t out of them. Thankfully the sweet barista had 2 identical cake pops for the girls. That was a definite win! And yes, those are plastic tarantulas in their cup holders. These girls love all things Halloween!

We ended the day with story time. They love when Daddy reads to them. These moments absolutely melt my heart.

We made a deal that morning to have the best day and I think we did. I love spending as much time as possible with these girls. Very soon, we will be adding another little lady to this crazy life and I can’t wait to capture all those moments too!

37 Week Bumpdate

Hello 37 weeks!

This week is week 37 of my pregnancy. Just like with the twins, this pregnancy is flying by. We are so excited to meet her soon. In less than 3 weeks, we will be bring home our newest addition!!

 

Here is my 37 week bumpdate:

Weight Gain: 27 lbs. (I’m getting close to what I gained with the girls)

Cravings: My cravings have pretty much subsided now. I guess since the baby is getting so big, I’m not as hungry as I was before. Plus, my acid reflux has kept me from wanting to eat too much.

Sleep: Still not getting any! Waking every hour on the hour is definitely for the birds.

Mood: Hello mood swings! If you read my Mommy Meltdown post then you know that I’ve been a bit on the moody side. I’ve also been super emotional. I had to fight back the tears at church this past Sunday because they put the decaf coffee away earlier than usual. Seriously?!

Movement: She is still a wild animal. She has also been having the hiccups every day which is such a crazy feeling.

Dilation: I went in today and I’m not even 1 cm dilated. I definitely haven’t progressed as much as we had hoped, so fingers crossed that next week, things start moving.

Birth plan: I am hoping for a VBAC this time. I received my VBAC consent form today. That just makes the entire process that much more real. If my body doesn’t cooperate then I am prepared for a Csection again. As long as our baby girl is brought into this world safe and healthy, the means of delivery aren’t that important to me anymore.

Mommy’s Hospital Bag Checklist

It’s that time! Time to for this Mama to start packing that hospital bag.

With the twins, I had a scheduled C-section at 37 weeks due to blood pressure issues. Of course, I could have gone into spontaneous labor before that time, so I had my bag packed just in case. This pregnancy has gone by even faster than the last, so I feel like I should get that bag ready. Plus, with the combination of mom brain and pregnancy brain, if I don’t do it this week, it may never get done.

I put together a Hospital bag checklist to share with you of what I will be packing for myself, husband, and baby. Feel free to print off and use for yourself.

I will tell you that as far as the baby stuff on my list, the hospital actually provided diapers and swaddles. We didn’t use clothes for the girls because they had jaundice and were wrapped up like glow-worms our entire stay. If you want your baby to have a pacifier, I would pack your own. Most hospitals don’t provide those.

When I’m packing for a vacation, I always over pack, but when it comes to the hospital stay, I believe in simplicity. As long as I look semi presentable for pictures, (yes, I pack make up with my toiletries. Hospital lighting isn’t the best) then I am good to go. And don’t forget the dry shampoo! A mom’s best friend for sure!

I definitely don’t recommend stressing out too much about the contents of your hospital bag. If you forget something, most likely the hospital has it or hopefully a loved one can run to the nearest Target and pick it up. The hospital stay is so crazy and such a whirlwind. You don’t need a lot.

Letter To My Daughters

Dear Daughters,

Where to begin? I have to admit that I was a bit terrified when I found out that I was having girls. It wasn’t that long ago when I was a little girl. Yes, I was once your age. I remember how mean girls could be and I know that hasn’t changed. The whispering, the gossiping, the fair weather friends, the picture perfect girls in the magazines. I remember it all so well. I wanted to right this letter to all of you and give you some advice on growing up in this crazy world, a world that is so different, yet so similar to the one I grew up in .

First of all, BE KIND! I want you to have a good heart and be kind to others, even when they aren’t so kind to you. It can be so easy to stoop to the level of the mean ones, but keep your heads up. People will probably say unkind things to you. Often it is out of jealousy and insecurities. The things people say about you say more about them than it does you. I know that doesn’t make it hurt any less, but never return their negativity with negativity.

You are BEAUTIFUL! Not just on the outside, but the inside as well. Stay that way. You will be bombarded with images. You and your friends will probably want to grow up way too fast. You are only young for so long, please enjoy it and don’t rush it. Your looks do not determine your self worth. I remember looking through magazines and wishing I was tan like this girl, thin like that girl, pretty like the other. Comparison is a dangerous game. I had so many issues with insecurities growing up, well into my late 20’s. It took me so long to truly love myself and with that came a lot of mistakes that I know could have been avoided if I only loved and respected myself. Trust me. Keep your kind hearts and know that your empathy is a wonderful thing.

RESPECT yourself. If you don’t respect yourself, it’s hard to ask someone else to respect you.

USE YOUR MANNERS. Say please and thank you. Sounds simple? Well, it is.

Know that you will make mistakes. It’s okay. Learn from them, move on, and know that your Dad and I will always love you and be there for you.

And lastly, THANK YOU for being YOU! It is such a blessing to be your mom and to see the world through your eyes. You bring so much sunshine to our lives and I can not imagine a world without your little smiles and giggles.
