Mom boss Nicole Boehrig

What made you decide to start your business?

We were living overseas as missionaries, so our budget could be tight at times. I had studied gut health for several years and did loads of gut-helping things, yet still battled with some aspects of health.

When pregnant with my first, I started taking 2 gut-health products my sister recommended. Within 3 days my constipation lifted. Hello!

From there I fell in love with feeling GOOD from the inside out. It seemed a no-brainer to educate people about gut health and grow a business of coaching others to do the same.

Educating others, helping friends, and passionately serving have always been passions of mine!

The best part is I got to grow my business from our grass-roofed hut in Africa, which helped transition my family financially to one of our next dreams.

How do you juggle it all?

Jesus, my Pink Drink, and lots of tea!

Why is tea just a trigger for my bones to relax?

But seriously, it’s about trade-offs. You won’t be able to work from home and do everything. BUT you will succeed when you prioritize and those priorities take precedence.

Wednesday’s are date nights with my husband. No excuses. Sunday afternoons I plan for our weeks. I schedule my work times and communicate with my family. And quit watching TV!

But quiet time with the Lord and balanced hormones and moods help a LOT!

How did you meet your husband?

A rock climbing gym in college.

What is the funniest thing that happened to you recently?

I walked outside of our new rental to check the mail and stopped short.

I looked up the street…down the street. Walked up the street… walked down the street and concluded that our house was the only one on the street without a mail box!

Whaaat?

I felt crazy for texting the landlord, so I had my husband check when he came home. Yup. No mail box?! It reminded me a little too much of the dysfunction we often ran into when living overseas! Oh boy!

What is that one song that always makes you happy? What’s your jam?

“Girl on Fire”… because my daughter of 3 years belts it so well!

If they made a movie of your life, who would play you?

Julia Roberts!! Please let her play me!

Here’s a totally unfair question…If you had to choose between wine or coffee for the rest of your life, which would you choose?

Hmmm…decaf coffee? I don’t love wine or too much caffeine. So, decaf coffee for life!

When I became a mom, I wish someone would have told me….

That I would feel torn between intense production with my work and being with my babies at home.
I love being at home, but I realized it’s outside my comfort zone to slow down and play sometimes.
It pushes me. I get bored and I want to reach for my phone to check notifications.
I want my toddlers to do whatwant to do!
So,I wish someone might have told me that’s okay. And I would feel shame for not wanting to play with my kids every day. That it’s not a big deal. And just keep trying. And to have grace for myself because my kids sure do!

I want my daughter to know…

Her worth doesn’t come from the work that she does. It doesn’t come from perky boobs or how well she does makeup. Or how cute her face is… or how funny she is.

Her worth comes from her identity in Christ.
That’s she’s incredibly clever and smart, funny and cute.
And when she seeks her identity in God, and builds a romance of dance and give and learn, of love and acceptance with the Creator, much light and love will flow from her life. And that’s the type of legacy worth working for.

The last book I read was…

Go Pro by Eric Worre – it was UBER helpful! But reading about the Enneagram next!

Three things I can’t live without:

  • Sleep
  • laughter
  • sunshine

Describe your perfect day.

Today was as near perfect as it gets. It’s normal and my husband worked, but I love the rhythm of our week. Slept til 5:45… snuck away from the baby in bed. Prayed. Did quiet reading of my Bible on my phone. My kids snuggled me when they woke up and Face-timed my folks while I cooked eggs.

We ate quickly and threw on swimming suits. Drove to the YMCA and made fun memories with those 2 toddlers screaming and crashing around the water.

We ate snacks and blow-dried our hair then bought groceries as Aldi – I love that it makes it in my perfect day because that place is balm for my overseas-living soul! The kids napped. Hallelujah!!! That’s all you need for a good day, right?!

While they napped, I assembled my desk (we just moved) and I worked.

When my husband came home, we finished eating and headed straight out to the sunshine.
I love the ins and outs of our day. A day with two happy kids and a momma who’s thankful is a good day, right?

If you could give 18 year old Nicole one piece of advice, what would it be?

There will come a day when living your dream will be the hardest thing you’ve ever done; where the dream will be worth it, but you will be surprised by how HARD it is.

That doesn’t mean you quit. Just lean into it.

Accept the hard. Reflect. Learn. Know yourself, relieve stress however is healthy for you. And FEED yourself.

Feed the dream. Surround yourself with positive, inspiring folks. The dream will be worth it.

What advice do you have for moms who want to start their own business?

Be prepared to grow because your business will only grow as much as YOU do.

You’re the ceiling. Open yourself up. Read. Listen to podcasts. Study. Don’t expect a lottery ticket. Dig for gold in your backyard because it’s there. Inside of you.

You may need to tear out that head trash or lies you’ve told yourself.

Ditch toxic habits, but you wanted to do that anyway, didn’t you?

Go to counseling. Deal with your ish. Look it bravely in the face. And say, “Yup. I’m doing this. It won’t be easy, but it’ll be worth it.”

Then please come talk to me because you’re awesome, and I want to know you!

I had the pleasure of “meeting” Brittany last fall. We actually met at Starbucks. It turned out that she knows my father in law (like everyone else here in Evansville, IN).

She was offering some free life and mindset coaching to a small group of people. I knew nothing about life coaching and thought “what the heck? I want in!”

Game changer.

Brittany has a gift of connecting with women (and kids). She has a vulnerability and rawness about her that I just love. I knew right away before I had even thought about doing this Mom Boss series, that I wanted to interview her.

So without further ado, meet Brittany Deer.

What made you decide to start your business?

My why.

My husband and I had hit our rock bottom in life a couple years ago. House was in foreclosure, dealing with a child with mental illness, we were about to get divorced and our two boys were suffering from having parents that were never fully there. Mentally and physically.

So I hired a life and mindset coach and started to do the work.

The mind work.

Investing in my thoughts and checking in with myself to see what types of actions I was taking and then what kind of results I was getting from those thoughts.

Learning what childhood beliefs didn’t support the life I wanted and shifting them.

Starting out I did this work with the most basic life tasks, like getting out of bed not feeling overwhelmed and started to see massive transformation. From there my goals started getting larger and larger leading more towards my dream life. The life I always dreamed about but was so far fetched.

After doing the work and still doing the work I knew this was my purpose in life. To share my story and guide women and children to find their own inner power to want something better for themselves and their families!

How do you juggle it all?

What is not on the schedule doesn’t get done. If it’s a priority, it gets put on the schedule. And we sometimes have to be willing to not get things done in order to get to our priorities.

An example is time with my husband. It is a priority, like top notch priority. Families that have children, their spouse is always the last one to get the time. So I literally have “husband time” on my shared calendar with Tyler.

How did you meet your husband?

We met on the good ole Ohio River.

Living near the river, in my younger days I often had friends who had boats and we would spend the weekends out on the water. Memorial Day weekend was always a big one and he was with a friend of a friend on the same boat I was going on.

What is the funniest thing that happened to you recently?

Oh, geez. I’m clumsy. Honestly, I can’t even remember anything because clumsy is just part of who I am.

What is that one song that always makes you happy? What’s your jam?

Oh my!! I LOOOVE music! My family always has music on. One song that makes me happy though for many many years is Who am I by Casting Crowns. It’s not a up beat song but it reminds me every single time I hear it that life isn’t about what I have done but what God has done for me. And not about who I am but about who He is.

If they made a movie of your life, who would play you?

Either Faith Hill or Kathie Lee Gifford.

Here’s a totally unfair question…If you had to choose between wine or coffee for the rest of your life, which would you choose?

I would totally choose coffee. Totally! {Did I mention, we met at Starbucks?}

When I became a mom, I wish someone would have told me….

Honestly, I have a great support system. So I received, and still receive, lots of advice. I truly believe that doing it the way that works for you will teach you the best lessons in life.

I want my sons to know…

That they are so loved beyond words. They have a God that loves them more than anyone and is with them always. They have parents that will support and love them always.

The last book I read was…

I’m currently reading Sole Survivor by Holly Dunn Pendleton.

Three things I can’t live without…

  • Coffee(Starbucks)
  • Sunshine
  • My Jesus calling book

Describe your perfect day…

Wake up, read my daily devotional, get my kiddos on the bus, work on my business, go to the gym, come back home, work in my robe or gym clothes, get my kiddos off the bus, from 4pm-7pm spend time with my kids (baseball field, basketball court, boys scouts, wrestling, homework), have dinner at our kitchen table together, spend an hour or so with my husband talking about our day, sit in bed watch TV or read until 8:30-9pm, go to bed.

If you could give 18 year old you one piece of advice, what would it be?

Do whatever scares you. Always.

What advice do you have for moms who want to start their own business?

If you are being called to start a business or a side gig. Don’t sit and think about all the what ifs because your mind will eventually talk you out of going after it.

Think about THE WORST thing that could happen if you do start your own business. If you don’t think about physically or literally dying then you should do it.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The work is never done.

Mind work is part of self care and self love.

We have 50,000+ thoughts per day. We often don’t notice our own thoughts, the power of them, and the results we are getting from them.

Coaching can create some simply shifts to change your entire life and the world around you!

Happy Monday! I’m pretty excited, to say the least, about a blog series I am adding to Nau & Forever! This series is all about Mom Bosses!

I am inspired daily by some incredible women.

I truly believe that if you want to be successful, you MUST surround yourself with successful people. Empowering and inspiring women is my passion.

Periodically, I am going to share an interview that I do with an inspiring Mom Boss.

All of these women are different. Different lives, different jobs, different backgrounds, but all INCREDIBLE and INSPIRING!

My first Inspiring Mom Boss is Rachel Heavrin.

Rachel is from the same small town in Kentucky as I am. She is a wife and fellow girl mom to 3 beautiful little girls. What I love about Rachel is her realness. Ya’ll! She is a hoot! A self described hot mess, Rachel keeps it real and she’s so genuine. Totally one of those “will you be my best friend?” kind of gals!

She is the owner of Stitches N Giggles Boutique.

Mom Boss Monday Rachel Heavrin from Stitches n Giggles

What made you decide to start Stitches N Giggles?

“I didn’t really make a decision to start this business, it just sort of happened. I had just had a miscarriage and bought an embroidery machine.
After losing the baby, I struggled. I took a week off from my public job and continued to send my daughter to daycare. I struggled to pull myself out of bed every morning after that. I ended up taking that week to start figuring out my machine.
Originally, I had bought the machine to save money since I bought my oldest daughter embroidered items all the time. Friends let me practice on their kids’ stuff. I actually embroidered some of my husband’s boxers. Haha!
I taught myself everything I know that’s related to embroidery. Thank goodness for YouTube and Facebook groups.
From embroidery, it blossomed into boutique goods as well. So, I didn’t really make a decision to start a business.
This business has blossomed from a dark place in my life and has turned into something I truly love.”

How do you juggle it all?

HA! I don’t. Motherhood is hard. I don’t care if you’re a stay at home mom, a part time working Mom, or a full time working mom, it’s so hard.

I’ve been all three. They all have their struggles. My family comes first and everything falls into place after that.

How did you meet your husband?

I actually called him while he was on a date with another girl. (Ouch!) We have been dating since I was 16, so we have grown up together. Started dating in 2003 and married in 2009.
He’s my rock. He pushes me to do things I’m too scared to do. Every big decision in life, he’s been there to nudge me along. He’s also my protector. He stands up for me when I’m unable to do so for myself. He has the traits I’m lacking. I think we make a pretty good pair.

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently?

I’m that hot mess mom. Hi! That’s definitely me. I never pack a lunch for my school aged daughter. She was going on a field trip, so my unprepared self was required to pack a lunch for the field trip. The teacher texts me around lunch time asking if Presley was supposed to be eating the frozen package of hot dogs I put in her lunch box. Ummmmmm. No. That’s her ice pack because I couldn’t find an ice pack. My 6 year old was gnawing down on some frozen hot dogs on her field trip. MOM FAIL.

What is the one song that always makes you happy? What’s your jam?

Right now, anything Bruno Mars. I have a pretty wide variety of musical interests. I can go from Lil Jon’s “Get Low” to Mercy Me’s “I Can Only Imagine”.

If they made a movie of your life, who would play Rachel?

I’m going to say Melissa McCarthy. She seems to be a hot mess in most of her movies with a pretty good outlook on life.

Mom Boss Monday Rachel Heavrin from Stitches n Giggles

If you had to choose wine or coffee for the rest of your life, which would you choose?

Definitely wine. Don’t riot. I’m not a coffee drinker. I. Know. I’m not a huge drinker of either.

When I became a Mom, I wish someone would have told me…

About the emotional stuff. It seems that when you’re pregnant that everyone wants to give you their opinions on your body or tell you their horror labor stories. I didn’t find out the gender with 2 out of 3 of my daughters. I don’t know if people thought that gave them permission to critique my body, but holy cow. Ohhhhhh you’re butt is wide. That means girl. You’re nose is spreading, must be a boy! Are you sure there aren’t twins in there? Um. Yes.

I wish someone would have prepared me for the reality of a child. Not scare me or judge me. I worked a public job up until I had my first daughter. Very fast paced and constant travel.

After having her my life absolutely halted. I suffered from postpartum depression after having her. Just the stresses of having a new baby, hormones, and going from traveling to sitting still. It took a while to get in the swing of things, but we made it through. Talk to someone and loved ones need to be sure to recognize the red flags.

I want my daughters to know…

That there’s nothing so bad that they can’t come to me. I am always in their corner.  To stand up for themselves and others. They can do anything. Life is tough, but so are they.

Mom Boss Monday Rachel Heavrin from Stitches n Giggles

The last book I read was…

Confessions of a Domestic Failure by Bunmi Laditan. So funny.

Three things that I can’t live without:

  • My phone. (I know)-this is a big struggle for me. Everything business related is online. I try to leave it alone at night for family time. It’s hard guys. I have a love/ hate relationship with my phone.
  • My bathtub. This is my stress reliever. I don’t take a bath unless i just need to melt the stress away with the scalding water. My husband knows if I start my bath water that he best have control of the kids. That’s my time. Our water bill varies based upon my level of stress.

Describe your perfect day.

Oh this is hard. Like an imaginary perfect day or reality perfect day? In reality, a perfect day for me is no fighting among the kids, me not losing my patience with them, and we enjoy a day outside as a family. This is rare. I don’t enjoy outdoor weather unless it’s at least 75 degrees. Haha!

An imaginary perfect day is being on time everywhere we go and completed laundry. As rare as a pink glittering unicorn.

If you could give 18 year old Rachel one piece of advice, what would it be?

Stand up for yourself and don’t let anyone push you around. You are inferior to no one. Everyone puts their pants on one leg at a time just like you. (I’m still struggling with this one.)

Don’t sweat the small stuff. Life’s too short to worry over every little detail. Worry with the big stuff and let the rest go.

What advice do you have for moms who want to start their own business?

Do it! Life is too short to wonder ‘what if’. Do it. Take the leap. The worst you can do is fail. So what if you do? At least you tried. Be that girl boss!
